Fanshawe Street Greenroof: 2025 Silver medallist

The brief was to connect the people working in a central Auckland tower with indigenous biodiversity, on the roof. Natural Habitats planted a rooftop garden where each species is labelled with its Māori name, common name, species name, ecological description and its tikanga or historical use by tangata whenua.

With roadworks closing the streets below, crane access was refused, so every bag of growing media travelled up in 40 litre bags through the service lifts on pallet jacks. A dead roof is now habitat, insulation and a living reference library above one of the busiest streets in the country.
