Gold, Maintenance (over 1,500m²), Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025. Richmond, Tasman. By Kūmānu Environmental.

Built in 1924 and set among mature oaks, Washbourn Gardens showcase perennials, rose gardens and the much-loved Begonia House, a few steps from Richmond’s main street. As well as a popular picnic spot and event setting, the gardens quietly serve as a stormwater detention area in heavy rain.

Kūmānu Environmental leads the horticulture and mowing as Richmond’s premier park under the Tasman District Council reserves contract. Two people work the site through the week, topped up from other sites at peak, to a high horticultural standard: hand-weeded beds, seasonal floral displays of annuals and perennials, feature trees and extensive, crisply edged lawns, with a proactive spray regime for thrips and off-peak mulching and infill planting to reduce future maintenance.
