Gold, Commercial Build (Over $500,000), plus a Special Feature Award, Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025. Tahunanui, Nelson. By Kūmānu Environmental.
The site formerly known as the Modellers Pond shows that civil infrastructure like stormwater management need not be single-use. Kūmānu Environmental reimagined the underused, algae-filmed park into a landscape that integrates stormwater, tidal flows, ecological restoration and an evolving playspace.
Tidal waterways, a refreshed miniature railway, natural climbing and rope courses, viewing platforms, a bird-watching hut, estuarine planting, hammocks and a teepee all knit into the adjoining Waimea Estuary. Natural timber and stone echo the driftwood structures children build on Tahunanui beach, with marine-grade rope chosen for the saline environment. Built through Covid and major floods, it has stood nearly three years without decline. The client called the finish exceptional.
