Category Awards
In each project category, entries are judged for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
Premier Awards
These awards recognise the best overall category projects from the winning entries. Premier winners are judged as the overall winner across Residential and Commercial Projects categories for:
- Best Design Project of the Year
- Best Construction Project of the Year
- Best Horticultural Project of the Year
- Best Maintenance Project of the Year
- Best Environmental Project of the Year
- Best Student Design Project of the Year
- People's Choice
Supreme Award - Landscape of the Year
The winning entry of the supreme award "Landscape of the Year" will be based on a built garden project.
All winning entries in the Premier categories become eligible to win the Landscape of the Year Award (Members Only).
RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS (Built Project)
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT - Landscape Design Open project budget and property size
Key criteria for judging will be the success of the integration of the design and technology solutions with the site and the value of the contribution of individual design elements to enhance the overall concept.
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT – Landscape Construction: Up to $100,000
The total construction cost of projects in this category do not exceed $100,000 GST excl. Projects may include elements of soft landscaping, though the judges will especially be looking at construction skill and methodology.
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT – Landscape Construction: Over $100,000
The total construction cost of projects in this category are greater than $100,000 GST excl. Projects may include elements of soft landscaping, though the judges will especially be looking at construction skills and methodology.
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT - Horticulture Plant & Installation Open project budget and property size
Projects in this category are predominantly for the installation of soft landscaping, though may include some small hard landscaping elements. The emphasis is on plant selection/layout and quality of installation. Judges will also consider how the planting has been integrated into the spatial design of the project. Green Wall projects will also be judged under this category
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT - Garden Management/ Maintenance: up to 400m2
Submissions in this category will be assessed on the maintenance programme in place, the appearance and health of the garden and the impact that this programme has had on the design aesthetic of the design and how well it links back to the initial concept.

Submissions in this category will be assessed on the maintenance programme in place, the appearance and health of the garden and the impact that this programme has had on the design aesthetic of the design and how well it links back to the initial concept.
DESIGN ONLY PROJECTS
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT – Client Concept Design Plans
Projects in this category will be assessed on submitted design plans. Judges will consider how the project plans will successfully serve the client brief and respond to site conditions.
Commercial PROJECT – Client Concept Design Plans
Projects in this category will be assessed on submitted design plans. Judges will consider how the project plans will successfully serve the client brief and respond to site conditions.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS (Built Project)
REVEGETATION & PLANTING PROJECT - Open project budget and property size
The emphasis is on outcomes that demonstrate the enhancement of sustainable natural landscapes through restoration and new plantings. Projects in this category may include private or public work up to $50,000. This can include but is not limited to public park restoration and land rehabilitation for conservation and can form part of a larger scheme. Projects that qualify in this category include waterway/ stream planting/ community gardens.
COMMERCIAL PROJECTS (Built Project)
COMMERCIAL PROJECT - Landscape Design: Open project budget and property size
Submissions in this category will be assessed on the overall design of the space with an emphasis on the successful integration of design elements, their relationship to the site/situation, and the use of technical solutions in landscape construction design details.
COMMERCIAL PROJECT - Construction: Up to $100,000
The total construction cost of projects in this category do not exceed $100,000 GST excl. Projects may include elements of soft landscaping, though the judges will especially be looking at construction skills and methodology.

STUDENT DESIGN CATEGORY
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT – Student Design Project
Projects in this category will be assessed on submitted design plans. Judges will also consider how the project plans will successfully serve the client brief and respond to site conditions. The judges are looking for creative design solutions and excellent graphic communication in student design projects.
Awards Gala Dinner
The 2023 Landscapes of Distinction Awards culminate in a grand celebratory Gala Dinner to be held at the Dunedin Town Hall on Saturday 2nd September 2023
Finalists will be recognised for their vision and skill on New Zealand Landscape projects - and the recipient of the prestigious Landscape of Distinction Landscape of the year (2023) will be announced.

Application for Membership

Accredited Registered Master Landscape Member
The online application process to become a Registered Member is easy and quick to complete. Once an application is accessed and approved. You will have immediate access to promote your business incorporating the Registered Master Landscape band . You can see more benefits of becoming a Registered member here.
To be accepted as an accredited Registered Member, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be an individual or company who has been in business for a minimum of two years and can demonstrate excellence in the areas of expertise in which they are applying for or is

An Associate Member who is applying to become a fully accredited Registered Member
Applications for accreditation can be submitted across one or more of the following categories of expertise.
- Landscape Design
- Landscape Construction
- Landscape Horticulture
- Landscape Maintenance
- Management
- Supply
Associate Member
Applications that do not meet the associations criteria for fully accredited Registered Membership will be accessed for Associate Membership. To be considered for Associate membership. Applicants must be:
- Landscape practitioners who are new to the industry (less than 2 years experience) and or can demonstrate the capability to meet the criteria to become a fully Registered Member within 2 years.
Membership Restriction
- Only fully Registered members can promote their business incorporating the Registered Master Landscapers logo.
Membership Application Fee
- The Application Fee is $50 including GST, and is non-refundable.
Annual Subscription Fees
Registered Member: Fees are calculated based on members annual turnover gst excl.
- Under $500,000= $ 750.00
- $500,000 - $1,000,000 = $1,500
- Over $1,000,000 = $2,000
- Associate Member: $300.00 gst excl.
